Thank you for your interest in our course! Please see below for a description of our class procedures.

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE
--There will be fifteen 2 hour sessions covering the Drive Right text material and the DOL Driver guide.

--The DriverZed simulation program we use will extend the class 20 minutes for twelve of the sessions.

--Driving will consist of 5 hours of specific lessons and a minimum of 1 hour of observation.

--All lesson assignments, tests and final drive lesson must have 80% proficiency.

--According to the Dept. of Licensing "no student is allowed more than three make-up classes during the course."  If your child misses a class they may make it up in the next session. If they cannot do that, the student and instructor can find a time agreeable to both, for a charge of $40 per session.

COOPERATIVE EFFORT
·We believe the student’s education will be enhanced by the cooperative effort of the student, parent and our school.
·The more positive and collaborative this experience is, the more likely the student will have accident free driving.  We encourage parents to allow for as much practice driving as possible.
·Young drivers need good role models to help improve awareness of their social responsibility and behavior in driving.

FACTORS TO CAREFULLY CONSIDER BEFORE REGISTRATION
Although it is rare for a student not to be successful, special attention should be given to these issues:
--student must be at least 15 years of age within 3 days of the first day of class.
--maturity
--responsibility
--positive attitude
--school class load
--school activities
--commitment to completion
--emotionally ready
--available practice drive time

RICHARDSON’S SAFE DRIVING SCHOOL

We are pleased to announce are inclusion of the popular nation wide driver simulation program  Driver-ZED.  This state approved video simulation consists of four unique driving scenarios that include city, country, highway, and work zones.  It incorporates two of our most important driving techniques, the IPDE Process and the 5 step Smith System of Driving.

Quoting from the Driver-ZED supplemental program;
"Teens need to be taught that driving is a task that is both complex and demanding, even for the most experienced drivers.  Driving involves controlling a motor vehicle from one point to another while complying with traffic laws and regulations.  While driving, there is a constant interaction between the elements that make up the highway traffic system (HTS): the driver, vehicle, roadway users and the environment.

Often times, teens think that driving only involves the manipulation of the vehicle.  However, the process is much more complex than that.  The role of the driver in the HTS is one of processing information and making decisions.  Competent drivers do not just operate and guide vehicles; they are involved in a complex and constant process of perceiving and deciding how best to control the speed and position of their vehicles in one traffic situation after another.  Fortunately, most traffic situations encountered are routine and fairly easy to deal with.  However, there are times when complex traffic problems arise which drivers must deal with in a very limited amount of time. It is the failure of drivers to respond properly to such problem situations that lead to most collisions.  Therefore, the development of traffic problem solving skills is a basic requirement for safe driving."

In my 10 years as a licensed driving instructor, the single most dangerous factor that I have seen in young drivers is their inexperience to identify potential conflicts early enough to avoid serious consequences.  It most certainly is not that they don’t care; they simply don’t know how to look, see early and decide accurately.

Using the Driver-ZED program puts the user into 60 live-action situations that require the user to identify, predict, decide and execute the best course of action for the situation at hand.  They will learn how to see danger by actually experiencing it on the computer instead of behind the wheel.  The various driving skills, along with decision-making, can be tested at their table prior to behind the wheel.  The program offers four kinds of challenges: SCAN- Brief video that asks what they have seen, SPOT- Longer clip that stops to ask what risks are present, ACT- Scenes that asks the driver to spot risks and choose the correct actions, and DRIVE- They will be driving down the road until approaching a traffic problem and they must choose when to act and what to do.

The state requirement is 6 hours of drive instruction or 5 hours of drive instruction AND 4 hours of simulation.  We will offer the required 5 hours of Driving Instruction, 30 hours of Classroom Instruction (15 Lessons, 2 hours each) and include an extra 20 minutes from Lesson 3 through Lesson 14 for the Driver-ZED program.  For example, a class scheduled from 5:45pm to 7:45pm will be completed at 8:05 from Lessons 3 to 14.

We will be able to give additional drive hours for your child if you desire.  The cost is $50.00 per hour.
